Fun little novella that somehow manages to be cozy and foreboding. The perspective of the first part of the book seemed a bit juvenile for a college student which took me out of the story a bit, but the creepy family makes up for it. I also appreciate that the author tied in unfortunately believable details about marginalized women at the end of the story.

Definitely read this and skip the audiobook. There are baffling creative decisions to include page flipping sound effects every few minutes and the narrator legitimately just cannot do an American accent. At one point we learn that the narrator of the first half of the book has a Valley girl accent and I quite literally laughed out loud.

DID NOT FINISH

The story sounded fine. But I only 5 about 30 minutes before I gave up because every page turn and other background noises could be heard in the audiobook.

A creepy story of murder and Christmas. Soooooo perfect for this time of year. I appreciate Peter Swanson's acknowledgement at the end that he wanted to write a book for those who enjoy the holiday and those who don't. A 4 star rating (instead of 5) only because I don't anticipate it would win any awards - a quick search however indicates a play adeptation won the George Devine Award for debut play and exploration of what it means to be human. I interpreted the ending however to be more of a "spirit from Christmas past"....
