I loved this follow-up to Book 1. Like all great sequels in a fantasy series, we don't have to spend so much time establishing the world and magic system, leaving room for her to expand it, make the world richer and the magic more layered, and this book did just that. Also great for the plot and characters to be out of the UNC/ weird early college program thing which always felt sort of forced to me anyway.
LOVED the tension between Sel and Bree and felt like both characters had a lot of growth in this one. Also enjoyed some of the newer side characters like Valechaz.
The ending got a *bit* muddled... especiallythe Erebus reveal. I liked this plot point but wish we had found out differently rather than just "somehow Bree firgured this out, without any indication this was something she was working on, even though we've literally been inside her head the whole novel" - that's cheating us a bit as readers and probably would've made more sense for Arthur to reveal this to her somehow since he knew the shadow king.
I thought the author did an incredible job traversing time and detail between medival Wales, American colonialism and slavery and present day racism. I could feel her deep connections to these eras and loved the tension between both the exceptional and universal experiences Bree is navigating as a magical Black teenage girl.
