Ugh I love Selwyn so much and am so happy their romance finally got explored.

If there was slight question book one of how evil the regents are and how racist this organization is, this book left no question.

It also gave us an interesting look at how the lieges and scions themselves are treated. Frankly, this felt like a fantastic criticism of capitalism along the vein of Hozier’s Eat Your Young.

Bree is even more frustratingly reckless and I’m glad that some of the other characters checked her on it. I STILL don’t understand why they didn’t use the noise device against the Merlins first rather than just going straight to Arthur possession but it also felt like a culmination of Bree’s character decisions of taking on all the danger rather than trusting her loved ones to manage.

Did I finish Bloodmarked or did Bloodmarked finish me? Holy FUU— It was just never ending chaos, and so, so .. smart. Intentional and intricate. This series is going to stay with me forever, oh my god.

This book was truly great. I’m not sure if i would say that it was better than the first, but it did definitely expand on this world and story in a meaningful way. With the first book there were scenes  I didn’t care too much for and wanted to get over with, that was not the case with this one, i found all of the characters and plot developments to be much more compelling. I wish we had gotten a little bit more of Nick in this one, as his character provides a grounding and calming presence in the book to balance out the complicated plot, but alas. Thankfully Sel was more than enough to keep everything interesting and entertaining throughout the book, so Nick’s absence wasn’t too much of an issue. Speaking of Sel….. my god, what a character. He seems exactly like the kind of character i would hate and be annoyed by, and yet, he was such a highlight in this book. He’s so funny to me, he’s  written like those dark, brooding, always serious MMCs, and he certainly sees himself that way, but everyone else just finds him kinda annoying and pretentious and that creates a hilarious dynamic. He’s so aggressive and constantly picks fights only to get his ass handed to him in the next page. That being said he is also a very complex and interesting character, he has his own struggles and problems he has to deal with and you really come to understand why he acts the way he does and come to care for him deeply. He’s also such a hopeless romantic deep down and i think that’s adorable. One other highlight was Valec, he was SO MUCH FUN. He’s funny and arrogant but also very caring, even though he’d like to believe that he’s a bad guy. The scenes at his bar were my favorite in the book, i think. He’s just so charismatic and i hope i see more of him in the next book. Id also like to see more of Lark in the next book, i think him and Bree could make a good team and im really curious about his backstory. I just hope the whole cast gets reunited quickly in the next one, because id love to see more of Nick, Sel and Bree as trio. I have a feeling that won’t be the case though as the next book seems to be multiple POV. Overall i think the strength of this series is in the characters and their relationships with each other, sure the setting and plot are interesting but i think it can get a little crowded and complicated at times, so im gonna need more scenes with all the characters in the next one, especially with William so that he can explain the ending a little for me.

It's so so good! Deonn is truly a master storyteller and writer! The world building gets richer and richer, the magic system makes sense, the mystery is awesome. The book takes you through all the emotions, I had tears in my eyes in a lot of parts. You can feel the pain and rage of Bree so clearly and deeply.
I  deeply admire the purposeful choice Deonn made to echo the horrors and mistreatment that Black people have suffered because of the colonisers in the past, in Bree's treatment from the reagents. It makes the treatment she receives from the whole order even move horrifying and rage inducing, but also justifies Bree's decision in the end.
The plot is pretty straightforward with enough mystery to keep you guessing but feels a little jam-packed nearing the end. There is a small problem with pacing for me but I love the in-between moments so I don't mind that much.
Overall I'm very excited to start reading the next book.

4 stars. i didn’t solidify my rating of my book until i read the authors note. as a whole i thought it was a little *slow going*. in the beginning we are processing the the weight of bree’s title and her grief. we aren’t given a second to breathe happily. but thats the point me thinks. i would’ve enjoyed my reading experience more if i had known how heavy it was gonna be compared to the legendborn (but thats on me not the book). the way generational trauma and expectations was handled in the book was spot on. bree went thru what a lot of other young black girls who are the “first” do. the dedication hit home so thanks <3.
