The way the author took advantage of the format for certain climatic moments I think was very effective. The emotional beats of this story were clear and evocative. I will say I wasn’t sure whether or not I was supposed root for the main romance in this book.

This is a strong second book. The story is fully developed and doesn’t feel like filler, as many second books do. The characters make logical and emotional decisions that fit their development and age. We also get a lot more Root history and side characters, both of which help drive the plot and create a unique voice and experience for our main character.

This book also powerfully merges fantasy with a historical time period that’s often left out of the genre—particularly the realities of slavery and its enduring effects. It adds depth and meaning without losing the momentum of the story.

The stakes are high, the emotions are strong, and the plot moves fast in unexpected ways. It’s fun and heartbreaking—a very solid read.

My only complaint (which isn’t really that big of an issue) is how young the characters are. If they were aged up even two years, much of the story would make more sense. It’s hard to see adults manipulating and pushing kids into a war like this, and it stretches belief that parents, schools, and law enforcement would just sit back while teenagers go missing or run around unsupervised. I know it’s fantasy and YA, but slightly older characters would make it all more palatable.

Still, this is quickly becoming a favorite series for me.

Action was great, a lot of the soul searching was boring. Also if this doesn’t end in a legit thrupple I’m going to be so upset.
