Ghost Wood Song manages to capture aching truths about bisexuality and growing up in a difficult family, and marries them to a sumptuous atmosphere, ghost-lore, and well-earned twists...the result is intoxicating and fabulously creepy. The author's characters are deep and complex in a way that never detracts from the pace, and I'll definitely be reaching for it to re-read in the future. All the stars.

"all this family ever does is bury it's secrets, and yet they keep climbing out of the dirt and sneaking up on us."

What a gorgeous, atmospheric and beautiful read. This story wraps itself around you in its melancholy melody, ringing with dark family secrets, supportive friendships and much needed acceptance/understanding.
A perfect Autumn read.

This book's vibes are immaculate and spooky and a study in southern gothic. I will definitely read from Erica Waters again.

The world-building and casual presence of ghosts took some suspension of disbelief, and that might be something that people wouldn't like about this story, but I really love how the presence of the ghosts developed into a clear metaphor in the quarter or so of the novel. I thought overall, the last quarter tied the story up beautifully, and I think having some of the revelations or at least more setup about Shady's family history earlier in the novel would have made this story stronger as a whole.

Shady is navigating mother/father/stepfather, sibling, friend, and romantic relationships, which is very reflective of life. However, all of these elements felt very compartmentalized and separate from each other (except the friend/romantic relationships), so we might spend a chapter focusing on family things and then shift to friendships and then to different family members, and it could have been a little more blended.

This definitely isn't for everyone, but I would say the best audience is fans of eerie vibes but not total horror and speculative stories about grief.
