Thoughts on the philosophy of science and science's relation to religion.

A nice quick read ☺️

I liked the scientist's spin on religion. He states that doubt is so important to science, because it leads to discovery. "...it is important to doubt and doubt is not a fearful thing, but a thing of very great value." Maybe it's in my head, but I think that implies that it should be integral to all the ways we think about the world, including religion.

This book was a little hard to read because it seems like it's written word for word from his lectures, so it's not edited like books normally are. It doesn't flow as well as a book trying to make an argument. I wasn't inspired to read it, so it took me a while to get through.

Having intended to read something by Richard Feynman for many years, I purchased this on impulse when browsing in a used book shop over Christmas. It contains three lectures Feynman delivered in 1963 to a general audience. He begins by describing how scientists think and work, then offers his thoughts on the relationship of science to the realms of religion and politics, before concluding by lamenting the various ways in which the contemporary age is insufficiently scientific in its approach to forming beliefs and tackling problems. The lectures are clear, unpretentious, and sometimes funny. Feynman was emerges as not merely smart but also thoughtful and human. I am left with a greater desire to read some of his published essays. Even better would have been the chance to study physics with him at Cal Tech!
