I'm not normally one to go for slice of life stories, especially those set in Appalachia. But the second I picked it up, I couldn't bear to be parted from the characters. Even though they have very different ideals from me, what they spoke to about love and family was the truest thing I read in a novel in a long time.

Little Queer House in the Appalachian Woods meets The Ice at the Bottom of the World with a dash of feminist Monkey Wrench Gang thrown in, which is about the biggest compliment I could make of a book. Snakey!

Little Queer House on the Prairie meets The Ice at the Bottom of the World with a dash of feminist Monkey Wrench Gang thrown in, so basically a perfect book. Hope you're okay, Snakey. I'm thinkin aboutcha.

Gorgeous writing that absolutely perfectly captures the complex and beautiful place that is Athens, Ohio. However "out-there" you may think this story and these characters may be, trust me when I say they are all real, and they are all wonderful human beings doing their absolute best with challenging situations in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Read it, and for a moment revel in the amazing, deep, and confounding enigma that is Athens.

Like many others, there was a time when I thought about walking away from this book; but I persevered, and I’m so glad I did. Also like many others, I can’t put my finger on why I loved this book. The characters frustrated the hell out of me and most of the time I didn’t like them, but somehow ended up loving them? I don’t understand it. I guess that’s what makes them so realistically human and the story so compelling.

Heartfelt, gritty, and well-written; I adore these flawed characters who claw their way through poverty and society in Appalachia, turning toward each other with love despite their individualistic impulses. This book stayed on my mind well after I finished it.

I was so bored I didn't finish it. I really tried. I don't often abandon books but life is too short ya'll.
