Encompasses so much quintessential Appalachia, for better or for worse!

Hoooo boy it was time to reread this as more of an adult. 2018/19 me (can’t remember) didn’t appreciate it enough.
It’s fierce and gritty and full of questions about freedom, family, choosing each other, the function of idealism in parenting, loving a place that doesn’t always love you back… I’m crying again damn.

Interesting book, queering the frontier narrative. Slow to start, well developed voices and complex characters. Living off the land and motherhood, mixed with chosen family and community. Challenging gender and relationship norms. Honestly the plot didn’t make much sense and was frustrating at times. Overall not bad! Needed to be faster paced for me.
emotional

I mostly enjoyed this scrappy found family story set in Appalachia. I liked that these characters were difficult to pigeonhole into stereotypes that others might have of people from that region. I think it could’ve been a bit shorter, but I was engaged to the end.

The first 50-60% is kinda slow in a relaxed way that let's you sink into the characters and the setting. This is super important for later when things take off and the characters wonder, "How did we get here??" You know exactly how because you were there.

Each character is richly imagined, with their own voices. I learned a lot too about the setting and context, which is very different from my own.
