I did not enjoy reading the first portion of the book, but the plot was engaging and I kept going and it grew on me and I ended up enjoying it! The three main characters were all pretty intensely unlikeable, and it took me a little bit to get past that and enjoy the book.
The author crafted such a unique voice for each of the four narrators, I really enjoyed how distinct each one was.
A few parts of the book felt a bit rushed or out of placeand Karen’s weird activism moment seemed to come out of no where and did not feel aligned with the choices her character had made up until that point. It was a cool thing to do, but didn’t make a ton of sense that Karen did it. I also think the story line with Aldi felt a little strange didn’t flow with the rest of the book as well as other moments.
I think this book wrote a story about queerness in a way that I have never seen it written before, and I really loved that. It raised questions around what is family, what do we owe people we are in relationship with, values vs practically in life, and overall was a very interesting book. The amount that this book has left me to think about made up for the few critiques I had on the plot structure.

Just got bored and was having trouble following
The kinda book where the characters are unlikable but in the end you love them because they‘re so human

The only reason this isn’t getting five stars, is because I wanted more. It’s a beautiful book.
It was well written and very realistic. I just personally found the characters and their incessant bickering too annoying to keep reading. They were all deeply unlikable, which just isn’t the sort of book I personally enjoy.
I don't have strong feelings in any direction for this book. It seemed like an accurate portrayal of the many ways it is difficult to live outside the conventional systems established by well-intentioned governmental authorities.
This is one of those books I’ll be thinking about forever. The characters and stories felt SO real, the author did an incredible job at making me feel like I knew these people in real life. I don’t think I’ve really read anything like it before. This is like the only book where I think the different POVs actually made the book better. Queer, nontraditional family dynamics against the rural Appalachian setting really did it for me. I’m ready to raise my baby on 20 acres now
