This book grew on me (not unlike the snakes that cover their house). At first I found Helen and Karen to be so aggravating and awful that I didn't want to continue reading, but once Perley's POV was introduced, I became invested in the characters and appreciated how complex and nuanced they were. I also think that CPS's intervention in the back half of the book highlights the prejudices/assumptions people have about Appalachians (myself included). I'm glad I read this.

The first four chapters cover a year or two. Dialogue is often spaced inside informational paragraphs.
It's comes across more as a nation, telling me exactly what's happening in a scene without showing me.
It's not a style for me, but the characters certainly are flawed and interesting.
