An interesting crime novel. The story's pace was slow until the second murder. There is always a second murder. The ending was intertwined with the confusing parts from the first third and John Blizzard's own past.

Lastly, John Blizzard has an interesting hobby. Restoration of an old steam engine. A unique idea, and not one that most main characters would have.

An archaeological investigation at a WW2 prisoner of war camp outside of Hafton in northern Enbgland, discovers 16 bodies in an unmarked graves. The forensics conclude that 15 died during a flu epidemic just after the end of the war, but the 16th was much more recent.
DCI John Blizzard and DS David Colley lead their team in the investigation.
An enjoyable and interesting well-written mystery, with a bunch of likeable characters. A very good start to this series and I look forward to reading the next.

Well plotted and intriguing British murder mystery

A fine example of the British murder mystery/Detective Inspector genre. Blizzard and Colley are interesting characters and as I read I kept picturing any number of police inspectors from BBC or PBS television shows. The murder mystery here in twisty-turny and there are the requisite thug criminal sorts but also the clever red herrings.

Despite this being book one in the series I felt like there was previous knowledge I was missing. References to recent history in a number of areas made me feel like there was background about Blizzard I should know. It made me feel off balance.
