Once again, I picked up this book, unsure of what to expect and was amazed to say the least. The book was filled with unexpected twists in the tale and left my heart pounding after I finished the book. The characters, once again, captivated me and kept me hanging on every word. I'm excited and a little nervous about what the third book has to offer based off of everything that happened near the end of the book.

Thrilling narrative with spectacular zest. The plot was incredible and the main character has developed so well. Nikki Kill is absolutely extraordinary. I love the tension between the characters. The betrayal was evident throughout the storyline. The cliff-hanger at the end nearly drove me crazy.

All in all, an amazing read. 100% recommend!

Nikki Kill is back to kick butt and save her life. This novel picks up a few months after the last one. All of the big players from the last book are either in juvie, hiding in another country, or totally ghosting Nikki. Though none of that really matters, because Nikki is graduating and trying to figure out what to do with her life. However, things turn up missing and a new DA is looking hard at Nikki for the murder of Peyton. With the help of her synesthesia and some old friends, Nikki goes back down the Hollis rabbit hole to find answers about herself and the crimes committed around her.

I enjoyed this book better than the first. However, I feel that it is slow. I feel that this same story could be told in fewer pages. I am not as committed to these characters as I typically am with Brown's other realistic fiction books.

SpoilerAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She had to go and end it with him unconscious! Just had to! Gah! I was flipping terrified that she was going to kill him, so I'm not super angry (hoping I won't have to be later), but still! I freaking LOVE Chris Martinez and Nikki's relationship with him, so don't you dare disappoint me Jennifer Brown!

I'm loving this series so far! Nikki can be quite frustrating at times, but I don't mind it in her the way I would with other characters. I expect it of her, so it's less irritating than it might be otherwise. Now I get to wait for the next book to come out. *Sigh*

(Note: I am not a teenager, so please consider this review accordingly.)

A solid sequel. I'm a big fan of Detective Martinez, so of course I liked all the extra page-time with him. Nikki definitely started to grow on me. I liked the twists and turns, even though I'm not usually a fan of stories that involve framing.

Again, if you're not a fan of reading books with a lot of language, this might not be for you. But if you don't mind it, this was a pretty gripping sequel in a interestingly unique series. It's like Nancy drew on steroids. ;)

I received an ARC of this book through Epic Reads.

I will start by saying I have not read the first book. I won an advanced copy of the book, then found out it was the second in a series. The book backtracks a lot so I think I understand most of what happened in the first book. (I may at some point go back and read the first one, but right now I have a pile of ARCs and Little Free Lending Library books to get through so those are taking priority.)

Overall, this was an interesting book. Similar suspense/thriller book to series like [b: Pretty Little Liars|162085|Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1)|Sara Shepard|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1377830522s/162085.jpg|2191061]. The most interesting thing about this book is that the main character, Nikki Kill, has synesthesia, which for her means that she sees number, letters, words, and emotions are colors. Honestly, the fact that Brown was able to come up with so many descriptive colors was impressive. This phenomenon/skill helps Nikki as she tries to solve various mysteries in her very complicated life (who killed her mother? who is setting her up? where are Rigo and Luna hiding? what is her dad keeping from her? what is Detective Martinez keeping from her? - the list goes on and on).

The writing was good and fairly fast-paced. This is the kind of book that once you finish one chapter, you want to go right on to the next one. Good set up. It took me about a month to read because a) I thought it was a good idea to try to read [b: The Big Short|26889576|The Big Short Inside the Doomsday Machine|Michael Lewis|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1446581171s/26889576.jpg|6654434] while reading this book, b) I was working on publishing my own first novel [b: Heartstrings by McKenzie Richardson], and c) this is a monster of a book.

Having said that, I do think this book was longer than it needed to be. It's almost 500 pages long and I think it could easily be cut down at least 100 pages. A lot of the time, Nikki gets stuck in her head and goes on and on about her crazy life. For the most part, I didn't care about Nikki's snarky inner dialogue. Just get on with solving the mysteries, lady.

On top of that, Nikki is not a very likable character. She seems like the kind of young adult who is selfish, arrogant, and sarcastic that you are supposed to immediately fall in love with despite her many flaws (as of course almost all the male characters do), but in reality she was just self-centered and annoying. Most of the time, I couldn't figure out why she was being so rude and mean. I get it, you had a hard life, but geez you could be a little nicer to people. The world doesn't revolve around you, even if you have a BA name like Nikki Kill.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It is definitely a page turner. It ends with a cliff-hanger, setting up the third book in the series. As I said before, I'll probably read the first book at some point and may even go on to read the third book, but for now I (and my wrists) need a break from these massive tomes about the dramatic life of Nikki Kill.

Also, gorgeous cover, btw.

I picked this book up 2 years after reading the first one and wow. I didn’t remember all the details but this book keeps you in so much suspense. If you like mysteries and adrenaline pumping, I recommend this series.

Fantastic book! Loved how annoying the way the world was, that the Hollises basically got away! Can't wait to read the 3rd book!
