I liked the main character and the mystery, but it was kind of disappointing he had such a passive role in the investigation, and not even crafted some theories of his own. As for the romance, I also enjoyed that he was firm on giving Merrick the cold shoulder. It's a shame their relationship didn't progress in this installment, as not much was shown to root for the love interest and look forward to the next part

An enjoyable, mystery with the MC being Kip O'Connor, a local born and bred in Pearl Bay. It's always been a quiet life, not including the pranks and teasing from his older brother and his best friend, Merrick, who now happens to be the Chief of Police.
Now he's embroiled in the murder of a local teacher who is new to town and seemed to like Kip. There's a lot of quirky characters involved, some seeming more shady than others but I love the community feel among them. The non-friendship between Kip and Merrick is fun to read. It reminds of children on the playground when one likes the other but pulls their hair to get their attention. Kip still holds a grudge from childhood pranks and Merrick doesn't help his own cause with teasing comments but Merrick really stands up for Kip in the dangerous moments he finds himself needing help. The murder mystery is really good with enough clues to help you along and entertaining enough to keep it light.
The audio of this book is excellent. This is the first time I've heard James Woodrich and he lends his voice very well to all of the characters involved and carries all of the emotion throughout the book. Though, my favourite moment may just be listening to one of the MC's drunk, always guaranteed to raise a smile.

I really liked this one. The storytelling is really good and all the characters are interesting, even the secondary ones. Although Kip's mom is quite annoying, I wouldn't be as patient as he is *laughs*

And yes, Kip is a bit naive but I guess if you live in a small town where nothing happens you usually don't think 'My, this guy is not who he says he is' :P And he acts quite realistically in the whole book. Except, you know, when he goes to talk to the bartender. But I get it, he was frustrated, and he was sure nobody was doing a thing about his stalker.

I liked the plot quite a lot, although I still don't get why
the killer didn't finish Kip as soon as he got it. Except for the fact that the book would have had a very abrupt ending :P

But yes, as I said at the beginning, I really liked this one and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series :)

❝[…]anyone who thought Merrick Dawson had a soft spot for me was insane❞
