This was a pretty enjoyable mystery, with great WWII facts thrown in. The only thing I didn't like about it was Isabel. I felt like she was sort of inserted into the story so the author would have a female character, and she wasn't very likable or believable.

Although there were aspects of this book that were really good - the puzzles and the real history intertwined in the story - I am glad I read this with my boys so I could stop throughout and say NEVER DO THIS! The characters did so many things that were so completely stupid in this day and age - get into a car with someone who is basically a stranger and who has lied to you - for just one. The parents acted in completely unrealistic ways for any sane adult - completely over or under-reacting. (No one thought to involve the police until the end?)

I would have given it fewer stars if my kids hadn't thoroughly enjoyed the puzzle aspects and I did like being given an opening to talk to them about the real Monuments Men and Japanese Americans' contributions in WWII. If there is a sequel, and the door was definitely left open to one, I hope the author can find that fine line of an exciting story and kids as heroes without making all of the parents idiots and the smart kids putting themselves in danger through actions even dumb kids wouldn't think of doing.

Easily 4.5 stars.
