Sometimes you'll be really enjoying an agatha christie book and then she'll whip out some wildly racist shit that has me just taken aback.... like what on earth was the random blackface moment at the end....... the repeated use of "oriental" to describe a white european man just because he was the villain....... At the same time, reading a book from the 1st half of the 20th century and being shocked by this also makes me feel like that gif of the guy who looks in the bag and then says "i dont know what i expected". But sheesh

hmm

I'm a bit dubious when I pick up an Agatha Christie thriller (Passenger to Frankfurt scarred me) but this was thoroughly enjoyable (caveat for some period-typical racism).

adventurous mysterious

In many ways it was more like reading a spy thriller than a classic Christie mystery. The way the many loose threads came together and discoveries were brought into the open was still very familiar.

Read this in one day by the pool in Chianti because it was one of the only interesting-looking books at the airbnb. Overall a classic Christie novel, not really predictable, a bit random, entertaining. Loved the strong female protagonist. Could've done without the exotification of North Africa and the unnecessarily voyeuristic depictions of "The Orient"

Of course, in classic twentieth century fashion there's a ridiculous plot twist involving a white guy doing blackface, which was really unfortunate
