A weird and dated Agatha Christie novel first published in 1954, during the Cold War and time of the Red Scare. Not really a mystery. I enjoyed reading it but it is not one of her books that has held up well. Lots of political and international intrigue, but not much humor and the characters have no depth. Interesting to see her try her hand at something else!

Well, that was certainly different from Christie’s usual story! Definitely not what I was expecting going into this. And there wasn’t really any murder until just before the end - and even then it was just a little tidbit of information than anything big.

I did enjoy this. There were moments for me I think where I struggled to stay engaged in all the details and science talk, but overall a solid book.

A strange occurrence is happening. Notable scientists from around the world are disappearing. One of the scientists' wives has received a message to travel and meet him. Suspecting foul play she arranges to leave specific messages for authorities investigating the disappearances. However, as a result of a plane crash, she perishes. The trail seems to go cold. Around the same time, a young woman is stopped from ending her life and given an opportunity to do something adventurous that could end her life but may not. Figuring she has nothing to lose, Hilary Craven accepts this cloak-and-dagger mission which leads her on several travel routes that ultimately lead her to somewhere deep in the desert of Africa. Arriving at the desert fortress, Hilary is surprised to discover the missing scientists among a larger community of communist sympathizers. She's not sure what her play is now that she has arrived at the final destination of her mission, but she's discovered in her travels to this communist compound that she actually wants to live. But now, she's not sure if she can make it out of this alive.

This was fairly interesting. It goes without saying that a lot of books written post-WWII include the communist threat, cold-war era that we entered into. Christie succumbed to this easy plot point but then put her own, unique spin on it.
adventurous challenging hopeful mysterious fast-paced

Promising premise but she never manages to make it work. Only persisted as a completionist.

buku pertama agatha christie yang aku baca di ipusnas, intro nya cukup menarik dimana menceritakan tentang seorang wanita yang berusaha keras mengakhiri hidupnya namun malah ditawari cara bunuh diri yang lebih menantang, yaitu .. menjadi mata mata inggris! wkwkw

Enjoyed this; it’s quite clever and it’s entertaining.
