"I have a heart for every year I've been alive"

I usually don't know what a book is about when I start reading them, so that first sentence got my expectations all the way up.
Such a pity I was let down.

I found this book slow and honestly, quite boring. I feel like there were plot holes that were just being patched conveniently during the book.
The author didn't took her time world building. We were just given enoug  information as to understand we were in a different nation.

The thing I disliked the most was how the enemies to lovers arc was treated. They literally are the kind of enemies that are supposed to kill each other on first sight and without doubts. However they don't. The feel "strange" almost, as if is not what the want and need at the moment.
And the way it's turned into love was so fast it doesn't even feels like they were mortal enemies to begin with.

The final fighting scenes felt messy, I didn't understand what was happening at all.  Perhaps I'm just blood thirsty, but we got the happy ending without losing anyone or even talking about the crew that was lost. They were talking about the fight, how the sirens were lethal even out of the water but we didn't actually got a glimpse of that. Also I was truly expecting bloodshed, since the humans were in one of the coldest places in the world and had way too many layers of clothing as to no freeze to death, however everything sounds smooth, as if the climate conditions suddenly disappeared.
Overall, the fighting scenes were absolutely centered on Lira and Elian. What happened with everyone else? Who knows, but apparently (almost) everyone is such a badass and survived both the pirates and the sirens.

The story follows Lira, Siren royalty on her quest to steal the heart of the prince number 18. When Lira kills one of her own she gets punished by the Sea Queen and becomes mortal and gets the quest to kill the most powerful prince of the kingdom.
The setting was what made me pick up the book and it was a great choice for a summer fantasy read. I always loved Sirens in video games and other fantasy worlds so it was a very fun read. The story is very straightforward and while I enjoyed the whole setting, characters and story, it was very predictable.
I listened to the audiobook and the POV of Lira and Elian, the female and male main character were read by two different people which I very much enjoyed and what made the story very lively. I overall enjoyed the book but it was nothing mindblowing and I knew what I would get from the beginning. The storytelling was very well done but I hoped for a little more depth and twists in the plot.

I did enjoy this book, I loved the mini quests leading up to the big one it did make it feel like there was more going on. I love the characters of Lira and Elian but the connection and romance of their characters felt a bit forced in places I didn’t fully believe in how their connection developed but it was an enjoyable fantasy adventure read

A dark and twisted Little Mermaid... but with sirens?! Umm, YES, YES, YES. We're talking enemies-to-lovers, siren-killing princes & collections of human hearts. Alright, the final battle scene didn't quite do it for me (what is it with the overly dense fighting descriptions?) but I'll let it go on the basis that this is Christo's debut. 4.75/5 utterly bingeable YA fantasy content.
