The only problem I had with this was that it felt like a retelling of The Little Mermaid. Yes, I realize that this book was purposefully a retelling of that tale. However, I prefer that if a book happens to be a retelling of a fairy tale that it doesn’t feel like it takes specific, recognizable elements from it. This one did. A lot. The seashell necklace? Lira’s bright red hair? Lira pushing herself up onto a rock to look at Elian near the beginning? The eel-like mermen being akin to the evil Sea Queen’s henchmen? So many parallels.

The tension between Lira and Elian was so good, though. I mean, come on. The moment their paths cross, it’s just insults, deception, and intrigue. It went on so long that I thought that perhaps we wouldn’t even get a resolution to the slow burn that wound its way through the plot. When they did end up kissing for the first time, I’ll be honest, it felt a bit rushed even though it was near the bitter end. That moment did have a great payoff shortly after, though, so I can’t complain. And that ending? Absolutely. So good.

I feel as though some of the pacing may have been a little off, but the end was well worth it.

Worst book I have ever read. This book and I have serious issues. Hate this book soooo much.

3.5 ⭐️ Always in for a good enemies to lovers, but there was too little of the romance aspect in it for me

A Sirenic story with a difference (in To Kill A Kingdom, Sirens and Mermaids are completely separate and very different creatures; just one element of this book's diverse and imaginative world-building), another riff on the underwater princess turned human going after a human prince. Only this princess didn't asked to changed, the prince is also a pirate and siren-killer, and romance is not on her mind. If you like the sound of bantering pirates, vicious sirens, great characters and world-building, and romance with a heavy dose of snark, check this book out!

2.75. The pacing of the book was weird. Halfway through te book I felt like nothing had happened yet; how was I already half way? The ending felt really rushed so nothing that happened really made any impact. Because it all happened so fast there was no time to linger on any emotions. I did laugh quite a few times (mostly because of how ridiculous the dialogue was was) but this made it still kind of a fun time. Just needed to lean in to the cringe

3.5/5 rounding up. I enjoyed this book and will read the sequel in time. Like the siren element and the world was interesting.
