In my opinion, I feel it is difficult to successfully make a stand alone fantasy enemies to lovers. I was excited to take a break from all the series and give a stand alone a shot, but this one just fell flat in my opinion. Fantasy requires a certain level of world building that is hard to fully digest in a work of 300 pages. Similarity, enemies to lovers requires tension and slow burn that is less successful in a short stand alone. I felt the ending was abrupt and rushed, the last 20 pages included the final battle scene and a happy ever after. In addition, the two protagonists hated eachother for a majority of the book so the happy ended seemed too quick. He forgave her so quickly despite everything she’s done and everything he stood for his whole life. Also, their relationship felt a little forced… I did enjoy the elements of the story with pirates and sirens. I also like that it was an easy standalone even though it was just okay.

I enjoyed this! got a bit lost in the middle & it started to drag a bit, which was at odds w/ a very quick-paced ending, but the story was an intriguing and inventive retelling

This book just wasn’t for me. It was a bookclub read and I figured I would pick it up. The book was fast paced and easy to read but it felt like it was missing some background information and plot. In order to truly understand more of the story, I think a more intensive world building was needed. The chapters could have been labeled with which perspective we were following because I was always confused until they were addressing each other (that may have been an ebook issue only). The characters were not developed enough for me. There were two main characters and a lot of side characters. I felt like I never knew any of them. I don’t think I will be continuing this series (if it is one) or picking up anything else from this author. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.
