Thank you to Seal Books for gifting me the ARC and finished copy!

The book covers a wide expanse of topics, and though it doesn’t always follow a linear path, I felt like I benefitted from each subject; some I felt incredibly validated by, others I realized weren’t covered in my education. I’ve seen some reviews criticize Oluo’s personal tone in some passages, but those were some of my favorite parts.

Oluo’s writing is captivating, compelling, and intrinsically personal - I really got into my groove about halfway through the book and couldn’t put it down. I’m surprised I haven’t seen this book as many places as SYWTTAR, especially because this book went more in-depth.

Really interesting read. These things feel like they should be required reading for everyone.

Wowza! This one definitely made me think A TON! This book gave me a lot of insight. What a gift Ijeoma Oluo is to us.

This book has some very interesting history of America that is not taught in schools. It also has some very hard truths.

Listened to the audiobook and I loved it. I feel like I can listen to this book easily but one day I def need to get the book and annotate it. I want to save quotes from the book. Great read.

Absolutely brilliant.

There are some really great and thought provoking ideas. There were a few glaring holes that you can tell the author addresses toward the end. I like the authors writing style and the subject matter.

Personal rating scale
1= dnf/ awful read
2= the concept was creative or nostalgic but not very well executed
3= solid read. I liked it but can’t think of anyone I’d recommend the book to
4= I really liked the book and can think of people I’d recommend it to
5= loved the book. Can’t stop thinking about it. Would be willing to read it again

Another five star book by Ijeoma Oluo! Mediocre is really eye opening and I learned a lot. I read this book quite slowly as there was a lot to take it and it’s all very heavy. In the end I’m so glad to have read it and hopeful for the future of America.
