So, I love this author so much but you could definitely tell this was her first book. It definitely wasn't bad, and I still enjoyed myself. However, you can tell her writing and plot structure isn't as refined here. I found myself still questioning a lot of things, and wanting a better resolution after reading. I feel like even though I liked the characters, and they're was some character growth. They still could have been more flushed out and had deeper motivations?

This book was all the things I wished it wasn’t: the main character’s self pitying, weird and awkward moments, unresolved tension, slow paced, and a “wait huh?” Ending. Basically there’s a friend group and Julie disappears and comes back a year later, as a vampire who can’t control her urges? And the friend closest to her -Elise- just complains and whines and pities herself throughout the ENTIRE BOOK I WANTED TO SCREAM! All the friends hate their lives, and once Elise lets Julie go into the woods to be “free” the rest survive, and try to live in the present. This book was awful and it was a huge waste of my time that I’ll never get back. Reader be warned!!
Graphic: Body horror
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Classism

this is my second Rachel Harrison book and idk if I’ll reach for more after this. Just something about the way the plot unfolds and wraps up feels rushed but also like it takes forever? Idk what it is

This book was.... Weird. I don't know how else to put it. The body horror just seemed so out of place. Felt like this book couldn't figure out what it wanted to be.

Holy frik Batman! I have been reading a decent amount of horror lately and it has yet to get to me quite like a movie. But Harrison delivered on this one. I legit had a dream last night about this book, and not in a good way.
It’s a bit odd as a whole being as you journey through 2 years in less than a chapter. And even then when you get to the meat and potatoes I keep thinking I’m going to learn something about where Julie was and why she became what she did. But I don’t which was truly disappointing.
I was seriously sucked into this book and gripped at the idea but I was disappointed in what was inevitably left up to my imagination.
