This was a really unique book and while I really loved the romance in this book but it was really rough for me. This book is beautiful and the romance is great but the subject can make this hard to read. I found myself in tears at several places.
I would definitely recommend this book just be aware that it can be heavy. It's sweet and beautiful and will definitely make you feel all the feels.

Afterlove took me on a very emotional ride. In the beginning, you will meet Ashana and Poppy. They are young and in love. Until they aren't. No, they didn't necessarily break up, but one did get ghosted.
Their romance was adorable throughout the entire book. When they were together, I was happy until I wasn't. After being sad and seeing Ash barely moving on with her reaper life, I was overjoyed when they had a little reunion. Then, I was sad all over again. Mostly because you only see a reaper for one reason.
At first, you'd think I would be jumping for joy since they can see and speak to one another again. No, I didn't go down that route because I was being cruel to myself. I kept thinking the worst thing was going to happen. I won't spoil what did but just know that hope never dies.
Other than that, this book basically broke me. Cut my heart out and walked away with it. I wasn't expecting to feel all these emotions and feelings, but I sure did. It was horrible and shitty. YET, I ate it all up and couldn't but the damn book down.
In the end, I loved how each page tortured me until the very last sentence. I went on a merry-go-round of emotions and have zero freaking regrets. I enjoyed getting to know all things about Ash and Poppy. The other reapers were interesting too and I liked how they cared about one another.
Oh man, this book. Please go read it.

When Ash meets Poppy on a school field trip, she can’t quite believe her luck. At first, she even believes that the beautiful red head will actually meet her for coffee, but when they meet for a first date, then second, then third, Ash finds that she wants to spend every second she can with her girlfriend. Their happiness is short lived, however, when a fateful New Years’ Eve puts Ash in the wrong place at the wrong time and makes her a reaper, stuck escorting the suddenly dead to Charon’s boat on the shore. Things only get worse when Poppy sees and recognizes her, and the girls realize that Poppy’s time is ending--but neither of them know how long Poppy has left. Could be hours, could be days. Even if it means Ash will be stuck in purgatory, Ash and the other reapers are determined that Poppy won’t die alone.
The first half of this book is a sweet slice of life about two queer girls sneaking out together and being happy. The next quarter is Ash learning how to be a reaper, and the final quarter is Poppy’s final days. The pacing was a little slow for the first half, but the characters kept me invested enough. Contemporary romances are not my wheelhouse; I had assumed there would be more ghosts and reapers involved, and that it wouldn’t be so… normal. But the tragedy of their young deaths and their true love made the story bittersweet. It was pleasant enough, but you need to be in the right mindset to be able to handle it.

So so good despite how tragic and sad this is. Cried a couple times; I think listening to it really made it even more sad. I love Ashana and Poppy, they are basically everything a sapphic wants their love to be, minus the whole dying part. Still, definitely a book I’d highly recommend to anyone.
