Afterlove

Tanya Byrne

3.98 AVERAGE

I am currently grieving my mother, who passed away two months ago. This book, from dedication to afterword, has magic and truth and catharsis in its pages. You won't be sorry.

I might have a slightly unfair rating but I was trying to be as unbiased as possible (just because it’s not a usual style of book for me - I got it in a Fairyloot box ages ago.)

If I had to describe this book in one word it would be soft: A rose tinted sunglass, summer sunset, or the stillness of midnight sort of soft.

I don’t normally read romance focused novels unless they’re comedies and I definitely don’t read YA romance unless it’s fantasy first romance second.

I really enjoyed the concept but for me it was entirely about Ash and Poppy’s relationship and I suppose I would have liked more depth into the reaping process and hierarchy. It almost felt as if the author was trying to avoid alienating any which religion by being very vague about who Deborah answers to and where the knowledge of whose death is when comes from.

If you want a heart-felt PG sapphic romance this will be up your alley.

If you want something with a bit more meat to it either in plot depth, spice, world building - I’d likely skip it.

“I feel like I’ve loved you for a really long time, but it still isn’t enough.”

“I almost want to die now so that’s the last thing I ever hear.”

Wow, I wasn’t expecting such a big heartbreak but I guess I should have been expecting it. I feel this book could be a part of the trend “if you liked this, read this” with They Both Die At The End. This book is divided into two parts “before” and “after” and mainly in the “after” it felt like reading They Both Die At The End, the whole “running against time” thing.

I really loved this book and the writing of Tanya Byrne and I think everyone should read this, just get ready for the tears…

“And oh, it's such a shame. Such a shame that she'll never get to do this in a long white dress that swishes behind her like peacock feathers. There's no time now.”

“Don't worry about dying, because while you're
worrying about that, you won’t notice the thousand tiny ways that you die every day.”

Likes
  • Ash & Poppy: Cute and wholesome
  • Ash & her family: Realistic and refreshing as a good and loving dynamic
  • Grim Reapers: Awesome concept
Dislikes/ Wished Was Better
  • Editing: Found a good amount of syntax and wordy mistakes that stuck out badly
  • Repetition: The prologue and then pt. 2 chapter 11 (read the book and you'll see what I mean)
  • Exposition of Grim Reapers: Explained so messy and complicated despite simple ideas
