It's cute but the story felt rushed. There were so many great ideas and possibilities to extend the plot. Still enjoyed it.

the ultimate “we’ll find each other in every universe” trope
Afterlove is a contemporary sapphic YA paranormal romance/urban fantasy about a teenage girl who becomes a grim reaper. Ash is sixteen, just found her first love, and said “I love you” to her for the first time when she dies in a car accident. Instead of moving on, she is offered the role of a grim reaper to help ferry the dead to the afterlife. But when she learns her girlfriend Poppy is destined to die soon, she must make a choice.
The book started off as a teen romance—a swoony story of first love between two young women from their first meeting to their first ILYs on New Year’s Eve. A sapphic relationship between a mixed race girl from a working class immigrant family and a rich girl with absent parents already made for a romance worth reading, and we do get great moments between Ash and her family that really drew me in. Then Ash dies, and I just thought the book never reached the full potential of its premise. The grim reaper aspect felt perfunctory. Instead of the family dynamics I liked so much from the first third, it was replaced by a mentor and her fellow grim reapers that never felt more than a casual shallow friendships. The social and cultural differences between Ash and Poppy was never explored further too because of the time limit set by the story.
Afterlife is a sapphic YA paranormal romance that had a premise that got in its way.
