I wish I had listened to advice and read this before 'Blood of Elves'.
Like 'The Last Wish' this is a short story collection that really gets to the heart of the characters, motivations and world of the The Witcher. It sets up everything ready for the meat of the 'main' books.

I only struggled through one of these stories (The Eternal Fire was terribly tedious) but the rest were brilliant. I even had tears in my eyes not once but twice! The first at the end of 'A Little Sacrifice' and again by the final moments of the book in 'Something More' - even though I knew the reunion was coming. Geralt and Ciri's connection is so powerful and was built up so well in the novel as a whole.

Genuinely at the point where I can say that the 'Witcher-Verse' is my favourite fantasy world. We've got politics, intrigue, interesting characters, grey-moral areas ahoy! And the female characters aren't an afterthought nor are they one-dimensional. A rarity in this genre.

Geralt of rivia, father of the year

I love these books! This one was a little harder to follow along with since it skips around quite a bit, but I still enjoyed it a lot and I can't wait to see what happens next!

More retakes of very familiar children's tales: here we have the Little Mermaid, among others. While imagining Henry Cavill as the protagonist is sweet, the rest grows tedious. But take a gander, anyway:

I liked the continuing building of Yennifer and Geralt’s relationship. I definitely felt that was focused on more in these short stories. I think it painted a somewhat accurate picture of being hopelessly in love, when that love feels hopeless. Two people caring deeply for one another, but not necessarily being “right” for one another.

I liked the fleshing out of the “destiny” in the book, an inescapable pull not just to his child surprise destiny but also to Yen.

I maintain that the male power fantasy part remains slightly distracting. Everyone in the world wants to bang Geralt. I can relate, but that does not mean it won’t get points taken away for it!!!

5 stars

Very good. Loved to read the set up for the series in these short stories. Such great characters

This is the second book in The Witcher series that I have read. The first was The Last Wish. I loved The Last Wish and would read it again but I was disappointed in this book. For whatever reason, I just did not enjoy the first half (or so) of The Sword of Destiny. These stories were off and on a slog to read through:

The Bounds of Reason
A Shard of Ice
Eternal Flame
A Little Sacrifice

The last two stories were an improvement:

Sword of Destiny
Something More

...that being said, they were still somewhat confusing, especially when Geralt is hallucinating and remembering/dreaming.

I'm looking forward to reading Blood of Elves and I hope it is more interesting and engaging that this set of stories. I really like the Witcher universe and so even that "bad" stories are interesting, to a point.
