The book really hinges on the concept/plot but there is some layered characterization with the main character. Rowe has created a lore-rich alternate future that is rooted in the landscapes of KY and TN. However, These Prisoning Hills does leave much more world-building to be desired.

This is exactly my kind of sci-fi. I love the Owls of the Bluegrass. I love the implications of strange creatures without direct, hyperdetailed descriptions of them. I liked following the protagonist throughout the years. I think I especially liked this book because of the way it protrayed the way that people who haven't lived in a rural place treat those who do live there. There's a very particular type of condescention that I haven't seen many authors get right, but this author did.
