It was available at the time as an Audiobook from my library. Not usually the kind of book i would normally pick up, but I enjoyed the listening. Dont think i would have finished it otherwise. Loved the narrator, perfect voice for the MC, I felt he fit the character perfectly!
It wasn't a "romance" book in any trope of the word but there is a love interest and interactions which was almost refreshing (ive been on a huge Romance binge for like 2 years).

I liked how the ending of the book summed up and reiterated that life aint like the movies which is a reoccuring statement made throughout the novel.
If old time detective/Private Eye type books are your thing, a bit of realism in your fiction, you'll enjoy this! If your looking for more fantastical or whimsical, id keep looking.

The book took about 60% of the way through to get interesting, and as I thought we were ramping up it ended. Real bummer.

Sufficiently entertaining! A few repetitive moments. Audio narration was strangely flat despite the narrator not making any other character flat. But some people do talk like that so *shrug*

Every chapter is every other chapter. Okay, maybe that was a little harsh. Perhaps we can chalk it up to the very monotone audiobook.

Gord Stewart is a movie location scout who moonlights as a private investigator during the slow season. When his boss asks him to search for her missing-presumed-dead uncle, he sets off across Canada in search of the man.

On the hunt, Gord is met with a new love interest, the jarring realization of how often middle-aged men commit suicide, the dark side of PI work, and ultimately, having to decide what kind of man he is.

Even though this fell flat for me, I still wanted to know how the story ended. And at the end of the day, that says something. Maybe (definitely) don’t listen to the audiobook though.

It's OK. It did have some interesting twists, and if it's a series, I'll probably read at least one more if I want something fairly simple and undemanding. I did find it a bit depressing, especially because of so much talk about suicide, and the audiobook narrator's droning voice.

I found the characters a bit boring. The love interest woman was meant to be charming and funny, but I found her only slightly less boring than the main character.

Oh boy, where do I start? First off, let me make it clear that I am reviewing the audiobook version of this novel. It is very important to make the distinction, because I feel I might have liked the story better if I had read it instead of listened to it.

My issue, unfortunately, was with the narration. The main protagonist comes off as depressed and bored throughout the book, even though the story does not call for it. There is no emotion in his voice; he sounds completely flat. Which is bizarre because all the other characters have life and vigor. I don't know what was the idea behind that creative choice, but it ruined it for me. I never once believe he could fall for Ethel and that she could fall for him. Even when he said he wanted to see her again, it didn't sound like he did. At all. The chemistry was lacking and honestly, I'm not sure if it's because of the writing or the narration.

The story itself was... okay. I think it might deserve a 3.5 stars rating, perhaps even a 4, but I'll stick to 2.5 for the audiobook version.

Thank you to NetGalley and ECW Press Audio for this ARC. I offer my review freely.
