(Audio) I started this, and tried, but one hour in, and I am not into it enough to pursue, I do not know if it’s the actual story or the way the audio is done that I don’t like. I really thought I would enjoy itfrom the synopsis

Ok I loved this book. A different perspective of WWII that I haven’t encountered yet.

Hazel Gaynor's When We Were Young and Brave is a breathtaking journey back in time and half a world away.

Nancy Plummer is 10 years old in December of 1941, desperately missing her missionary parents while she is studying at a boarding school in China during Japanese occupation of the country. For the most part all is well, until Japan declares war on Britain and the US, leading the Japanese armies to take over her school grounds.

Elspeth Kent left Britain to teach at the Chefoo school to run from a past of heartbreak and seek out adventure. The very day she prepares to resign and go back to England to help with the war efforts the war is declared and no one is allowed to leave. It now falls to Elspeth and the other teachers to be stability and family for their students through the upheavals.

This is a haunting tale of resilience, loss and finding depths of strength to go on that seem impossible. The author gives wonderful descriptions throughout the book, and instills the story with a full gamut of emotion.

This book is 500 pages, but it read fairly quickly. Large print, thick paper and a vocabulary that doesn't challenge the reader. Good characters. The story of the camp for enemy civilians, terrible as it is, does not horrify as do stories of the labor camps and the places the Jewish people were sent to during WWII.

An international school in China is caught in the midst of WWII. The story from the POV of a student and a teacher

3.5
Loved the history and the characters, but I expected more about liberation and after the war.

Appreciated learning a piece of WWII that had not known about before.

I loved this book, which explores a little-known story of WWII. I was choking back tears during the entire final part. Beautifully executed.
