This is the first book in the Alex Delaware series.  The first part of book sets up the characters. The second half of the book deals with the mystery and investigation. The crimes in this book are very dark and there are a lot bodies, children and animals are hurt. I found the first part of the book a slow read, the second half was moved faster.

Some of the language used doesn’t stand the test of time.

Alex is not as sensible as in later novels. Neither he nor Milo are as likeable either. I've read later novels that are better.
I cannot recommend this as a dog is killed.

Typical beachside book. The story involves hypnosis, child psychology, crime, intrigue... all those great ingredients that make for a fun read in my book... get it? My book? The only thing that bothered me was that the main character is unfaithful to his girlfriend and this is never addressed. The guy is painted as very honest and compassionate and such, but then no big deal is made of his infidelity. It didn't make sense. Otherwise, fun!

Part of the reason I like this book is there’s a creeping Charlie (my favorite plant) in it. I tried getting one at the local plant store but they hadn’t even heard of it.
