Everything that deceives may be said to enchant - Plato

Kiera, Sebastian, and his father all travel to the rugged landscape of Cornwall on behest of an estranged family member's request to investigate the alleged murder of Branok Roscarrack, head of the smuggling operation in their family and uncle to Keira's father in law Lord Gage. Upon arrival, it is evident that there is more to the story...and the same family is in on it. Just as Keira and Sebastian are realizing they were lured to the Cornish shore under false pretenses, a more sinister plot emerges that has them fighting to survive.

I ate this one up! We finally get to delve into Lord Gage's mysterious past and ties to his criminal family. A tragic incident that led to Lord Gage leaving Cornwall, comes back into play in the plot. Seeing him struggle with his demons and guilt, Keira consoling him, and Sebastian finally being able to have open conversations with his father, was both endearing and heartfelt.

Lost Portuguese treasure, two warring coastal families, vendettas and greed..all while being a new mom, Keira has had an adventure in this one.

It's hinted that we're getting an art-related mystery next. It's going to be very enjoyable seeing Keira in her element!

This follows the story of Keira and Gage as they meet Lord Gage’s estranged family for the first time. They have been called to solve the potential murder of Lord Gage’s uncle.

I enjoyed that the author helped us understand a bit more why Lord Gage is the way he is because of his experiences as a young boy. Overall, I think we see the largest change in Lord Gage’s personality in this book and it is adorable watching him interact with Emma.

Semi Spoilers Below:

This book also made me realize that even though Lord Gage was previously one of my most disliked characters in this series, he wasn’t wrong: his family is full of terrible people.

I am not sure how I feel about the romance between Bree and Anderley. I really like both of their characters individually, but together it seems rather unhealthy. I also worry that if they should get married and then start having children, that we will lose at least Bree as a character. But alas that is a ways off.

Looking forward to the next book!

I can scarcely believe this is book twelve in this marvelous historical series! I enjoy the characters and the revolving scenery as the wonder couple travels, In this installment Kiera, Gage, and their baby girl agree to take Lord Gage to his father's home at the request of a great aunt. Family intrigue runs wild on both sides of Lord Gage's family and he is forced to deal with his past. I liked delving into Lord Gage and learning more about the circumstances that made his the taciturn person he is.

A solid entry although I feel like the ending was end was a bit abrupt.
