Jerri Nielsen was wintering over at the South Pole when she discovered a lump in her breast. She biopsied herself to determine the type of cancer. It turned out to be an aggressive and fast-growing tumor. There were no flights in or out for quite some time and so Nielsen, a doctor to the American scientists, had to administer chemotherapy to herself while waiting for the weather to clear. The writing is not too great and the family intrigues are a bit too much, but the story itself is quite incredible.
