4.5 Another winner from Joshilyn Jackson in thinking-women's lit
It kind of took me a long time to get through this book, but I loved loved loved the ending. The mythology woven throughout the book is a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the characters
I loved listening to this in the car over the past few weeks. Paula’s mother was quite the woman. She named Paula after an Eastern god that she worshipped and should actually be known as “Callie.” Paula hasn’t seen her mother in more than 20 years because she was given more responsibility than any little girl should have … and she betrayed her mother … then her mother found out about it.
Joshilyn reads her own audio books which is such a delight and the sole reason I picked this one up! And why I’ll gladly get another one!
A great listen!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book took me about 6 weeks to finish the first chapter and only a few days to get through the rest of the book. I needed to make it to the end of the first chapter for me to sustain interest in the characters and their story but once I was hooked it was good.

Her best book I've read. So rich in story. Go read it.
It's been a few years since I've read Joshilyn Jackson, and reading The Opposite of Everyone makes me wonder why it's been so long. One of my favorite things was that the city of Atlanta is practically a character. Living here, it's fun to picture the locations.
Overall, I liked the story. Paula's journey feels realistic. She isn't "tough as nails" on one page and suddenly Sappy Susie on the next. There's unexpected layers to the story, especially with Birdwine, which I really appreciated. And the ending was surprisingly satisfying.
Book club liked this selection. We all felt a little surprised by the story arc and the characters' evolution. Those of us who listened to the audiobook had a distinct impression of the characters that was not shared by those who read the book. Based on the discussion, this is one I recommend reading over listening.
The Opposite of Everyone delivers on complicated characters and complex family relationships. It made me remember why I like Joshilyn Jackson, and I'll be reading more from her sooner rather than later.

I got about 40% through the book and I still couldn't see a plot forming.
3.5 ish? That was simple and short and fun an disn't make me think too hard. I enjoyed the suspense, and the characters were just deep enough to be interesting, but not so much as to be too heavy. And it's nice every now and then to read a story that gets wrapped up with a nice little bow. :)
