Ratings round 2: Four stars

Notes, 2024: Okay, so... I knew I had read this before. But y'all, I do not remember those six days in September of 2017. Thanks, alcoholism! I read this again for the first time because it was a very hard week and I needed comfort books. I needed what only Joshilyn Jackson can write. And she came through. It was the pleasure and comfort and distraction of other people's problems and other people's ability to solve them. Thank you, JJ. Sequel, please?

I love Joshilyn Jackson, and this latest novel didn't disappoint. I listened to the audio version, and as usual, she narrated her own book, which is awesome because I love her voice and southern accent.

I got about 40% through the book and I still couldn't see a plot forming.

I received an advance copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

Joshilyn Jackson has written another novel that sucks you right in and doesn't let go until you finish. Even after finishing the book, I have found myself thinking about the characters. They are flawed, multi-dimensional, and fabulously intriguing. The plot, which could have seemed a little contrived in other hands, moves back and forth in time effortlessly, fleshing out the story and the background of the main character, Paula Vauss. The private investigator, Birdwine, shouldn't be likable, but somehow is captivating. I found myself rooting for him throughout the book.

I've read all of Joshilyn Jackson's books. This one is less steeped in the American South, interweaving the stories of Hindu gods and Eastern mysticism, than her earlier novels. It is, however, no less amazing. In fact, it is certainly better than her last few books. I don't know if there is anyone who writes complicated characters better than Jackson.

1. I need to start off my saying that I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
2. I don't always write reviews so please bear with me.

I felt like this book started a little slow. The first couple chapters I felt like I was getting a lot of information thrown at me but at the same time not enough. A lot of characters and story but not enough backstory. But once I got into the groove of the book it made more sense.
There are almost three stories going on in this book. The first being the main story with Paula as an adult following her as her world is turned around and she needs to look back in order to get herself to move forward. That takes us to the second story. Paula's past growing up with her mother Karen and without her and the people she meets along the way. Or really Kali and Kai's past as those are their real names back then. The third isn't really a story but a bunch of stories that Kai used to tell Kali, all based in Hindu mythology. Somehow all three of these weave together to make one wonderful story.
When Paula's world is suddenly turned all around it takes her past, her present and her mother's stories to make her way through. Along with the help of other characters, one being Birdwine, a PI and also her ex. Who seems to have no redeeming qualities but quickly became one of my favorite characters. It's hard to say much more without spoilers so won't. If you like when an other uses several stories weaved into one and the lost being found I think you'd enjoy this book.
