3.5 ⭐️

The second installment in the Neapolitan quartet picks up after Lila is married to Stefano, and the events that take place thereafter.  As the years go by, Lila begins to understand the demands that society has from a wife; and this makes her feel trapped and miserable, and this affects the way that she relates with others (particularly her best friend, Lenu), and she is unaware of how her actions and decisions are affecting the people around her.

The strongest aspect of this book is that the author captures womanhood so well -- from the internal struggles, insecurities, thought processes, desires, and feelings that all women can relate to, to the very flawed tendencies of comparing and competing with one another, and the complicated female relationships women can have with one another as a result of these complex emotions and reactions. Choosing to tell the story from the perspective of Lenu while she is reading the journals of Lila was a very interesting approach to express womanhood in a way that the reader will have to read between the lines and really understand what each character is trying to say as we learn from both perspectives.

The themes in this book are so rich, heavily focused on themes of feminism (keep in mind that this book takes place shortly after world war II had ended, and women back then still hadn't secured the same kind of rights that we have today) -- how women would lose themselves in trying so hard to keep up with society's demands and desiring to belong and to be validated, but slowly realizing that no matter what it is they achieved, they would still be overlooked.

What's in a name? My takeaway from this book was that we get decide what our name/s will be. True belonging is not defined by the validation of a community, but rather, learning how to belong and accept oneself fully; and choose to thrive anyway.

The characters in this book were so rich and really moved the story; if you are someone into deep character studies, I would highly recommend this book.  Personally, however, the relationships in this book became too messy; and while I love flawed messy characters, this was starting to sound more like a cheesy dramatic telenovela that I just don't tend to prefer (and put me in a reading slump, as well); but if that's your cup of tea, I would encourage you to pick this up.

This book is stunning. Even better than the first.

But she had known from the moment I appeared, and now, risking tensions with her workmates, and fines, she was explaining to me that I had won nothing, that in the world there is nothing to win, that her life was full of varied and foolish adventures as much as mine, and that time simply slipped away without any meaning, and it was good just to see each other every so often to hear the mad sound of the brain of one echo in the mad sound of the brain of the other.
