While I had some trouble getting into this volume, by a third of the way in I was utterly absorbed. In so many places this book broke, broke, broke my heart. There is something so raw and elemental in Ferrante's style that at times I had to put it down to escape a bit from the character's lives, like intentionally waking all the way up to avoid slipping back into a nightmare. But I mean that in a good way--it's about confronting some of what is both most banal and most challenging about being a young adult. Not always pretty, but frequently sublime.

Thoroughly readable and interesting, but not particularly moving. It seems to be more built on social drama than the first book, which can be entertaining but feels more contrived and less emotionally intimate.

There is something about the way the author writes that makes you feel like you are a part of the story. She writes in a way where you can see yourself in both of the main characters but are removed enough to hate or love the girls at any given moment. She doesn’t over explain details or use too many adjectives to set the scene yet each chapter is rich and full of detail.
I can’t get enough of the push and pull between Lina and Lena. Lina - so brilliant and easy to hate. Elena - so hardworking and capable. Both girls striving for better lives than their mothers had but unable to see a path to a more modern world. The way they fight for their education and the value that’s placed on being educated is inspiring.
Given the story takes place in the 1950s+ it’s a good reminder of how far Women’s rights have come since then, but also a reminder that many women are still ruled under the thumb of the patriarchy, strategic lack of education, and unwanted motherhood.
