The story was compelling after the first 75 pages. Appreciated the character description list at beginning of book / needs to refer to it constantly for character familial connections. It was dramatic and enthralling. Wanted to read whenever an opportunity arose.

I felt like the second book in this series dragged a bit, compared to the first (and the third, which I'm currently reading). By and large the two main characters, Elena and Lila, are just generally pissy and unpleasant and everyone is always fighting and jealous. It almost made me give up on the series because it made me stop caring about the characters for awhile. It could also be that my expectations were misplaced. I thought I was reading a series about female friendship but Elena and Lila don't often seem to be friends at all and instead try to tear each other down or root for bad things to happen to the other. But anyway, book 3 gets better so I'm glad I plowed through this one.

The second in the series this book was just as beautiful as the first. Don’t let the length scare you, the descriptions are vivid and the story full encapsulates you — you feel like you are there. In this story we delve into Elena and Lila’s friendship post Lila’s marriage. Elena continues to go to school while Lila strives to find her niche as a wife and shoe designer. We explore friendship, love, friendship, freedom, family values, jealousy, love/hate relationships and so much more through these short chapters. As with the first, it is hard to keep all the characters straight at times, but the prominent ones do stick out. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there were certainly parts of the story where I found myself hating each of the girls for various reasons and the deceptiveness between the two. It is beautifully written, not something you can read in one sitting, and provokes all sorts of emotions. TW: domestic violence, but it adds a layer of complexity to the story and friendship.
