Elena Ferrante had been compared to Alice Munro, and deservedly so. The Neapolitan novels have the same authentic portrayal of a woman's inner life, and of female friendship, but the rage over women's unequal position is far more apparent. However talented Elena and Lila are, they will either be denied the opportunity to realize their potential, or will have to fight far harder for the same opportunities that are freely available to even the least talented boys. The gender struggle is compounded by a lack of social mobility for young people of their class that ultimately makes adulthood a trap for all but the very talented and lucky. Reading this book in the era of Trump almost hurts, it's such a raw depiction of the reality women lived under until a few decades ago, and a reminder that recent advances can be rolled back more easily than we think.

An excellent sequel—Ferrante can write characters with such clear voices, and writes growing up so well. The prose is beautiful, the story is captivating—I cannot recommend this story enough and I cannot wait to read the third!

After listening to Ferrante second book of the story I’m not really sure how to rate it without having finished to whole series. It became even clearer that all for books are telling a story that has to be viewed as one big novel. While that isn’t as surprising for a series, it’s especially evident in this one.
It picks up right where the first one ended and makes the world Ferrante is describing even bigger, even more complex. There are so many characters that all have their own story, intertwined with each other. It feels like Ferrante is looking through a window and describing analytically what she is seeing. Although it’s written out of Elena’s perspective it doesn’t take a judgmental view at the people that shape her life, it just describes what is happening. But all of that with a clear, almost brutally honest language that doesn’t shy away from the darkest human experiences.
It is captivating without trying to build an artificial suspense, it just shows life and human relationships centering around a friendship of the two main characters.
I was thinking about stopping the series to listen to another book in between, but just half an hour after finishing it, I want to continue with the third one. That urge is even stronger than after finishing the first one, which is why I have to rate it even higher. I really don’t want it to stop.

Δεν ξέρω πόσο εύκολο είναι να ξεφύγεις από τον κόσμο στον οποίο σε παρασέρνει η Φερράντε στην τετραλογία της Νάπολης, άμα φτάσεις να διαβάσεις το πρώτο βιβλίο. Από το δεύτερο όμως είμαι σίγουρος ότι έχεις παγιδευτεί, άσχετα αν σου άρεσε ή όχι, έχεις γίνει μέρος του κόσμου της Νάπολης και τις ιστορίες τους, έχεις συναντήσει όλους τους χαρακτήρες σε αντίστοιχους ανθρώπους στην δική σου ζωή, έχεις υπάρξει και εσύ ένας από αυτούς, ίσως ακόμη να είσαι.
Γεννήθηκα στην Κύπρο και μιλάω την τοπική διάλεκτο, παρόλο που στο σχολείο διδασκόμαστε την Νεοελληνική γλώσσα. Αυτό το μπλέξιμο στην γλώσσα περιέχει πολλά προτερήματα αλλά κρύβει και πολλές παγίδες. Από ότι φαίνεται όμως είναι ακόμη ένα οικουμενικό ζήτημα, παρακολουθώντας τις περιπέτειες της ηρωίδας με τα ναπολιτάνικα και τα ιταλικά, και αντιλαμβάνεσαι ότι η ρετσινιά που μπορεί να σου κολλήσει αυτή η γλωσσική σου ιδιαιτερότητα μπορεί να σπρώξει να προσπαθήσεις να δείξεις ότι είσαι κάποιος άλλος για να είσαι αποδεκτός και αρεστός.
Η Φερράντε έχει μια φοβερή ικανότητα στο κτίσιμο των χαρακτήρων της και στην ψυχογραφία τους, στις πεποιθήσεις τους αλλά και στις αντιδράσεις τους, κατορθώνοντας να διεισδύσει σε πάμπολλα κοινωνικά θέματα, μεταφέροντας το κλίμα και την νοοτροπία της εποχής στην Ιταλία. Κοινωνικά θέματα που παραμένουν επίκαιρα, πάντοτε παρόντα στις διαπροσωπικές μας σχέσεις, ακόμη και στην σύγχρονη εποχή.
Δεν θα το χαρακτήριζα εύκολα αριστούργημα, αλλά είναι γραμμένο με μαεστρία και καταφέρνει να σε κρατήσει σε εγρήγορση και ανυπομονησία για την συνέχεια.

Voelde me zelden zo betrokken bij karakters als in dit boek en kan niet wachten om te lezen hoe het verder gaat. Het verhaal is rijk door de emoties (soms pijnlijk herkenbaar) en persoonlijke tragedies en successen van Lenu en Lila, maar ook alle grote thema's van vriendschap, huiselijk en maatschappelijk geweld, klassenongelijkheid en gender ongelijkheid komen tot leven.

Ferrante uses story beats that would normally read as soap opera melodrama, but distinguishes them with so much psychological detail. The friendship between Elena and Lila is one of the most complicated and fraught relationships I’ve seen depicted in literature, and I’m both excited and terrified to see where it goes next.
