Heart-felt and earnest, with a mixture of fun, uplifting scenes and some sad, moving moments. Some of the experiences Mia goes through felt so vivid that I wondered if they were based on the author's real life, and she confirmed this her author's note and the end of the novel. I don't reach for MG often, but I'm really glad I read this one.

This book is so beautifully written I forgot I was reading. It was just like being told this story by Mia herself—like this brave, compassionate kid was in the room telling me about all these things she gets up to.

The topics covered in this book are only too real. They're presented through the warm eyes of a child who has a deep love for humanity and a truly powerful sense of justice.

It's just perfect. I can't wait to read the rest of the series (bought them before even finishing this first book!)

what an enthralling and beautiful story. this is why i love middle grade so much, it depicts topics that are sooo important for children to know, theyre easy to read, they break your heart then put it back together, you can’t help but love these characters. i just love mia so much she’s the sweetest kid with the kindest heart, her family dynamic and friendship with lupe were so precious, also her relationship with the weeklies

This book was AMAZING! I loved every bit of it. I will definitely be reading the other two books, I finished this book in one day or 3 sittings! I absolutely loved the police things, the writing was so great that I was sad/mad during the police situations. I am, as well, a black person and I was really upset when the police and Mr. Yao accused him of stealing a car because of the color of his skin. I liked the ending, too. It was quite predictable though but at the same time, surprising. I thought it would end one way but it ended in a different way, still lovely though!

Loved it loved it loved! & reading the acknowledgments at the end and finding out that a lot of the story is based on Kelly Yang’s experiences makes it even more special! Such good messages and I love that more diverse books are becoming available to young people. Glad to have this one in my classroom library

Wow! This is such an important book for young readers which will give them a window into experiences of immigrants and will spark conversations about the important topics we need to be having with kids. Can’t wait to read Three Keys!
