“He grinned, and on his breath, I smelled things not known to me. I could not imagine what he’d seen, what he’d done.”

You can’t much miss me on a fae-folk tale and this one did not disappoint. The changeling aspect is so often overlooked, having a story dedicated entirely to it was refreshing. I also appreciated the reversal of fortune in regards to Guest.

Man, I forgot how much I love a good, happy ending.

While this book is intended for middle graders, I still enjoyed it. Nonetheless, this review will be from an adult perspective. I like that it brings folklore to kids without sugarcoating it or stripping it of cultural depth. I could certainly see the duel messages behind it: to learn from your mistakes as well as to not assume things about others. This last part is very prominent in developing the way the main character sees others. She realizes that people you think are good can be bad and vice versa, that you shouldn't treat people badly because you see them as less than yourself, and ultimately, that you should look down on others.

While I did like the message the book offered, I was really here for the horror/dark side of the book. It introduces the folk talk of changlings and takes it in a new direction. My critique of the book would be that it was a little repetative in teaching the main character her lesson, but, again, it is not intended for my reading level.

10yo’s review: until the end, I didn’t know what would happen with Thomas or Guest and if they would swap back or both go home with Molly. Molly was stupid and never learned not to trust anyone in the Mirkwood AND she never listened to Guest’s warnings even though he was always right. I liked that I couldn’t guess what would happen.

Sometimes MDH really phones it in and this is one of those times. The folklore behind the story is interesting but the writing is so clunky and the main character is so stupid and unlikable it's hard to care about what happens at all.

I really enjoyed this faerie story. This is not a glitter/tiara/flower faerie story, this is Irish folklore.

Read (listened to audiobook) this title as one of the Maryland Black Eyed Susan Book award nominees (grades 4-6) for a group discussion.

I thought about giving this book three stars because like other reviewers I found it to be a bit repetitive and became frustrated by the protagonist’s (Mollie) ignorance and reluctance to learn from past mistakes.

Ultimately I’ve given it four stars because I loved the audiobook narration which kept me intrigued despite the storyline repetition and for the subject matter. I’ll always enjoy a good book that involves fairies, folklore, and a quest! I also enjoyed the friendship that developed between Mollie and Guest.
