Oh, Huck Finn...he's such a funny kid, and Mark Twain is such an amazing writer. The way he crafted the persona and voice of Huck is really exceptional, and the story was (almost) thoroughly enjoyable to read. My one complaint (hence, the "almost") is that Tom Sawyer--contrary to how he is in his self-titled story--is all about romanticizing life and having great adventures based on the tales he's read and is like that to such a point that he becomes annoying. However, I guess his irritating behavior and insistence on complicating everything for the sake of heroics and "making a name" shines a kinder light on the rascal Huck, who is strangely solid and grounded in comparison.

YAWN. I found the first person narrative incredibly difficult to get though. The lack of strong narrative plot drove me nuts and I just got bored. However, I had to read it for my American literature class and it was an incredibly useful text to study in terms of the American dream.

I hate to criticize Mark Twain but once I put it down I seriously could not bear to pick it back up and continue reading it. First, it seemed like a replay of Tom Sawyer. Second, I could not get past the abuse and prejudice which dominated this book. I gave myself permission to not finish this book and I know I will sleep better for it!!

Re-read for the first time in over 20 years as preparation for reading Percival Everett’s “James.” Themes that stuck out for me: children having more humanity than adults; adults being gullible because they only see the world one way; friendship and kindness despite difference; morality not based in religion or legality. A lot of it is also very silly.

Hated it less than the first time I read it but felt it was important to reread before diving into James by Percival Everett
