This is a fantasy for people who like cults, dark academia vibes, and lots of interesting subplots!!
It had a super interesting world and well-written characters!! It did take me a little bit to understand wth was happening but that is generally true for any fantasy world. The romance was very good also

Because the book is launching tomorrow, I decided now is the perfect time to give my review. Thank you, Meg for the ARC, I love your tiktoks; they have really helped me with my writing.

Back to the review:

One of my favorite books growing up was "Beautiful Creatures" By Kami Garcia. The romance, the gothic aspects, mix with a hint of historical fiction, and of course, magic really warmed my heart at the age of 12-13 years old.

Reading Destroyer, felt like reading "Beautiful Creatures" all over again. It was dark, yet nerdy, yet super wholesome & magical. I (ironically enough) found it to be very cozy, and perfect for this time of year (writing this during Halloween).

If you love, magic, magical history, and cinnamon rolls: this book is perfect for you.

I have never before been so invested in a magic rock ever. I love how Meg pulls together science and magic and creates a romance novel out of it! More! I cannot wait for Sanctifier and all of my (Ru’s?) questions to be answered. This is a beautiful book. Read it already!!

Destroyer grabbed my attention right from the mysterious prologue! Meg is great at intertwining world building within the MC’s natural thought processes & actions, & I enjoyed how the book really launched right into the story without too much world building before the action began. The pace and flow of the book is really nice even though the spicy slow burn is… well a slow burn! The only disappointment I really had with Destroyer was that I was able to guess the ending (as well as some other aspects of the plot/characters) pretty early on. However, that in no way deterred me from wanting to read to the end! One small thing I appreciated about Destroyer was that I was able to easily pronounce all of the character names. That is definitely not a given in many, if not most, fantasy novels.

If you’re looking for a Mummy/Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider-ish meets medieval-ish fantasy book, then I definitely recommend “Destroyer” by Meg Smitherman! And I am SO excited for the 2nd book “Sanctifier” to come out soon!!
