I was occasionally amused but, on the whole, did not find myself as engaged with Master Copperfield as I had anticipated.

I have gaping holes in my education when it comes to literature. Russian lit is fairly well covered, but many authors who wrote in my mother tongue are missing. So once or twice a year I'll turn to a classic, sort of like a bran muffin, it'll be good for me. With Demon Copperhead coming out, I decided to take on its inspiration, David Copperfield.
I don't feel qualified to critique a classic that has withstood the test of time; I'd just be exposing my ignorance. I get that there is some impressive characterization going on. I know that Dickens is remembered for being the voice of the Victorian era and shining a light on the plight of the extreme poor and their treatment by the rest of society. While I haven't read any feminist criticism about him myself, I'm sure he's been shredded on that front. i yi yi. And of course, I'm reading about the 19th century in th 21st century and viewing it from a completley different lens. But seriously, "child-wife?" Did that really not sound icky in the 19th century? It made my skin crawl.
Another classic off the list. Bring on Kingsolver!

The stream of conscience narrative of young David Copperfield was very Anne Shirley-esque. I laughed out loud multiple times.

This book is amazing! Very hefty and wordy at points but a great tale about good people who do good and prevail happily in the end.
