This book was recommended to me by my son's OT, and it is a great first resource for understanding SPD and how it effects children who have it. My son has a mild case, diagnosed a year ago, though I didn't realize until recently just how far-reaching problems caused by SPD could be. Reading this was a major light bulb moment for me. It explains it all in a way that you can talk clinically with a professional and understand what they have to say in return.

Once again, the connection with Asperger's is left out. The book mentions ADD and ADHD as often having SI disorder as well. Why not Asperger's? Perhaps it's the book's age (published late 90s). Still rather frustrating. My son is an Aspie and has sensory processing issues, which is why I read this book.

A helpful introduction to sensory processing disorder, but don't go in expecting detailed activities or ideas for your specific situation. The detailed examples are a little repetitive, but they also help the reader begin to pinpoint the problems that their child does, and does not, have.

This book was informative and helpful as a parent (especially a parent to 4 very different children with different needs & strengths). Def recommend to parents and educators everywhere!

A worthwhile book on a disorder with a broad constellation of symptoms, but a judicious editing could both punch up the prose and integrate more recent findings, as well as effective interventions. Ms. Kranowitz knows her stuff, and as an educator working with students who suffer from a variety of neural and cognitive processing disorders, I found this book basically indispensable. So, on the basis of its use for informing pedagogical decisions, I rate this book closer to five stars.

"...if you have concerns about your own or another child, no matter how vague they seem or how inarticulate you feel verbalizing them, pursue them" is a quote from page 281 of The Out-of-Sync Child and sums up beautifully our role as parents, guardians, and caregivers. If you have concerns about your child, don't make excuses to yourself, rather educate yourself. We are their advocates. While it contains the medical information behind the behavior, it does so in an accessible way. It also gives practical tips and advice on how to work with children who may have sensory problems as well as directs the reader to available resources.

This book is a good resource for anyone working with children or raising them. Anyone who has concerns about their child or feels something is "off" might want to at least skim through this book. The book helps the reader recognize different types of sensory processing disorders, gives numerous examples, and even provides checklists. If there are concerns, it can help you articulate what those concerns are and how to explain it to medical professionals.

I recommend this read!
