Beautiful book. Bittersweet and emotional. You will fall in love with a wonderful lump of char who is a precious precious sweetheart and then weep knowing things like this are not meant for this world. Just wonderful.

Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster is a fantasy story set in Victorian Era London when Chimney Sweeps were a crucial part of the economy. Nan, the main character, is an 11-year-old chimney sweep who finds a "monster" friend who helps her with her struggles. I thought this book was a little hard to follow as there was a lot happening all at once. I could use this book in my classroom to teach about the genre of fantasy and how it differs from other fiction books.

This was such a beautiful book!
It had all of the feel good elements for me...historical fiction, child like wonder, Victorian era London, love, sacrifice and perseverance. It was a beautiful story woven by a master story teller and I look forward to reading more of his work! As always, the best sign of a lovely book is that you are sad when you finish the last page. I read this aloud to my teen son and we are both sad that it is finished and he's trying to persuade me to begin reading it again.

As the title says, the story of a girl and her monster, but also of love and friendship and growth and justice and hope. There’s nostalgia to this novel for me - I was taken back to those days as a child when I devoured the classics, you know, those books written in/about Victorian England, those books with adventure and emotion that is just right for the age of the reader who then also learns just a little bit about the awful injustices of history. As an adult I was still swept up by the story, but also spent awhile googling the terrible plight of young chimney sweepers and subsequent British child labour laws of the late 1800s. Both versions of me would consider this time well spent. I listened to the entire audiobook in one sitting and wept through the last half hour, so take that as a glowing review too!

Historical fiction with a fantasy twist. Such a quick read and beautifully written. You truly connect with the characters and get more insight into the history of this time. Also creates an opportunity to do your own research on some of the historical elements.

We loved this story. Heavy themes, but handled so well. Excellent writing, complex characters, wonderful story. This book moved me. It was sad in many ways, but life is sad. There was not an unrealistic ending where all the bad things came undone. But it’s hopeful and beautiful.
