“We are here, they are not”
Heather Morris has a beautiful ability of carefully telling the stories of survivors of the most heinous crimes known to man. I am baffled how Morris has been able to find these families so interwoven with one another this many years later but it truly tells the story of the power of humanity. Nobody would’ve thought less of the victims if they had simply given up but their endurance is something to be respected and admired. I cannot fathom the sheer mental determination to keep one another alive.

I think, before I read anything about the colonization of Palestine, I would have given this book 4-5 stars. After, though, that is hard for me to do. It is a very inspiring, well-told story. I also appreciate that it gives good insight into how the sisters survive after Auschwitz - a lot of WW2 books end when the war ends. But I couldn't read this without thinking about the people being displaced in Palestine even as the three sisters found their safety. Two wrongs don't make a right.
Originally gave this 3 stars just because I felt like it dragged on too long but changed to 4 when I got to the end and realized it was a true story. About 3 sisters who get sent to Auschwitz and tells the whole story of how they survive.

Having read both the Tattooist and Cilkas journey I knew this would be a fantastic, yet heartbreaking book. I don’t know if this author plans on any more books in this series but if so I’m there for it.
