It was actually amazing
Actually I don't like biography books but this? This was sth completely different

A must have for house with children... So many mini inspirational and awe inspiring stories, many of which can be used to foster powerful conversations about life topics. We have just been enjoying them and the youngest daughter can’t get enough!

I've read this book before and truly loved it, and while I still think this is especially good for young kids, some of the women portrayed are SUCH a questionable choice. For example, why is Margaret Thatcher in here? Why are the authors mentioning how she took away free milk from primary school kids and people hated her for it as if that's an inspiring example to follow and not a good reason to despise a person for?
Maybe that's because I was simultaneously reading a book about toxic femininity, but I couldn't help but notice that a lot of women in this book were powerful and had achieved a lot, yes, but only by hurting and exploiting others. Are we sure we want to tell little kids that these women should be looked up to?

And I understand that the entries were simply "good night stories" and kept very short on purpose, but there were also a few relationships that the authors portrayed as almost romantic when in reality, they'd been toxic and full of cheating (for example, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera). Again, I get why the authors didn't write in detail about the toxicity, but at least mention something?

Some of the women in here also had really tragic and sad endings, none of which was mentioned. Again, I get that, but it also felt a bit like false hope. Yes, let's talk about this woman who led a revolution in a dictatorship, but is it really so hopeful if we leave out the fact that they were murdered by their government only shortly after? Admittedly, the book also added dates of birth and death, so technically, you could realise it yourself. But I would've liked a little mention of this.

What I did like were the illustrations. The authors had worked with a LOT of illustrators, and they were all done so lovingly. Plus, their names were also put on the page, and I loved that appreciation.

Overall, I think the idea of this book was wonderful, and there were a lot of entries that I truly loved and made me excited. Not everyone was a per se powerful person from the start - for example, there was also Jessica Watson, who sailed across the world when she was 16, or Yusra Mardini, who was a swimmer who had to flee from Syria to Germany as a teenager and ended up at the Olympics in Rio in 2016. While they had the support, they didn't feel as untouchable as, say, Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton. There was also a good mix of women in the past and women who are still alive today, and a good variety across continents and countries. I really did appreciate that. But, as I said, they should've thought a bit harder about who should actually be looked upon as an inspiring example to follow. Maybe we should draw the line at acting like a Nazi sympathiser should be an inspiration for little kids.

I love the idea, but the writing leaves something to be desired. Rejected Princesses set a high bar that is hard to match.

So empowering! Every girl should know the stories of these amazing and strong women!

This book is a good starting point for learning about different inspiring women throughout history, but I feel like it’s not actually very well written and it’s really over sanitized. I know I’m being way too harsh considering it’s a children’s book, but children deserve good media too, right?

Whenever I get nieces, I'll read this to them.
