Zayneb is muslim and is half Pakistani & half Caribbean. She lives in Indiana and is suspended from school after an interaction with an Islamaphobic teacher. Her family sends her to spend time with her aunt in Qatar.

Adam is of Chinese descent and lives in Canada. He converted to Islam with his father and sister when he was 11. Adam was recently diagnosed with MS, the disease that killed his mother.

Zayneb and Adam meet on a flight to Doha, Qatar and there is a connection. Adam realizes that they both have Marvels & Oddities journals. They wind up in the same social circle in Doha and their connection grows.

This was a great YA read that is also enjoyable by adults. There are good messages in here about acceptance of others and dealing with prejudice against Islam.

Really, really enjoyed this poignant, smart, thoughtful story. Love story, some coming of age, good snark...I’m so glad I read this book. It was wholly unique and tells an important story about vulnerability, empathy, bravery, justice, and standing up for yourself and your faith in the face of blatant hate and prejudice.

I appreciate this book and everything it represents, but I didn’t feel anything for any of the characters.
