I was obsessed with this series as a child. I pre-ordered every new book and eagerly awaited the phonecall to tell me it was in stock.

Re-reading it as an adult is a different experience. The nostalgia helps a lot but it isn't the masterpiece I remember. Still, the characters are interesting and I enjoyed reading from different perspectives.

Book 1 read for Booktubeathon 2015. Oh Rachel, why did you act without thinking??? It's one thing to be brave, it's another to be foolish, and there is only a thin line between the two.

Phew, this one got me emotional

I liked this one better than book 1.

The ending felt a little rushed, but that's nothing compared to the sheer amount of feelings in this book. It's our first introduction to Rachel, my #1 favorite Animorph of all time, and I love her just as much as I did before.

The small scope of the book, focusing on a single human family, cuts to the core of the horror of the Yeerk invasion:

"Melissa cried. And it came to me, like a vision: All the children all over, whose parents had been made into Controllers. And the parents whose children had been taken from them to be turned into Controllers. It was a terrible image. I wondered how it must feel to see your parents stop loving you."

Gets into the interestingness of having adult figures of power be one of their biggest enemies, and looks secondhand at friendships sometimes growing apart (sometimes it's because of trauma kids!). Again, pretty solid second book.

The second book of Animorphs is from Rachel's POV. I am curious to see if she'll fall in love with Hawk Tobias or her frenemesis Marco. This book continues to deepen the lore of the Yeerks invasion and also introduces the family of one of our main antagonists, the assistant principal. At first, Applegate leads us to believe that Rachel's best friend is Controlled, but in a pleasant twist we see the true reasons for her friend's coolness. I hope for more surprises like this as the series continues!
