To be quite honest I was surprised how much I loved this book- it was so easy to read and all of the character developments and how emotional & layered it was.

I shouldn't have been surprised- this is Hugo we're talking about.

That feeling when you want to write a fanfiction about the Notre-Dame cathedral, but then you have to come up with a plot to make people read it, so you casually create one of the best stories in all of literature

Beautiful, gripping, intense. Hugo is a master of drama, irony, and passion. So many passages that will stop you, just so that you can read it again to appreciate it a second time. The intensity and tragedy of the characters' values are larger than life.

It was difficult to give this novel five stars, simply because the heart wrenching tragedy is horrific and depressing.

But I did, because Hugo has written a masterpiece. Hats off to the master.

I tried, I really did, but I just couldn't. This book is filled with unnecessary, boring information dumps that don't add to the story and can easily be cut out. I made it 35% of the way through this book and I wanted to throw myself into a wall. It felt like I had been listening for days.

I always force myself to finish books I start out of principle, even books I dislike. I just can't with this one. I think I made it over five hours and I was like, "Okay, I can do this, we're almost done, right? ........ Right?! 🫠 WRONG! 11 hours to go, baby, and I already wanna die, woo! 

I give up, this book has won. I'm throwing in the towel.
