Not badly written but so fucking boring it's impossible to read. Les Miserables was way better.
It's hard to believe Victor Hugo wrote this in like 6 months. It's SO LONG and he spends forever giving way too much background information. Like a whole chapter just describing Notre Dame. Which I fucking skipped because I just don't care.
Also too many side characters of no consequence. If it just focused on Claude Frollo, Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Phoebus you'd have a decent 100 page novella.

The last 10% was really excellent and there's no denying the writing is well done, but I didn't actually enjoy much of the book. It didn't give me the scenes I wanted and did give too much extra history.
Um Gottes Willen Victor Hugo ist glaub ich einfach nicht meins. Dieses furchtbare ausgeschweife ständig erinnert mich immer an die Monologe von meinem Vater wenn er mir versucht hat etwas zu erklären wonach ich gar nicht gefragt habe. Nachdem ich mich durch Les Miserables gequält habe, habe ich den Glöckner auf Spotify als Hörbuch gefunden und dachte "yey, dann muss ich keinen Aufwand betreiben", aber vorgelesen ist es einfach noch schlimmer!
Bueno, no creo que sea necesario decir mucho sobre lo que va este libro pues la mayoría lo conocemos de la niñez por ser la historia en la que se basa la película de Disney: El jorobado de Notre-Dame (de mis películas favoritas de niño) o porque la profesora de lenguaje los obligó a leer la novela.
De cualquier forma debo decir que me siento extremadamente decepcionado, porque de verdad esperaba una historia diferente. El autor divaga demasiado con todo, me explicó: capítulos interminables sobre la descripción de la catedral y sus variaciones en el tiempo desde la edad media, también un capitulo completo como de 30 páginas donde se nos explicaba cómo se veía París desde la catedral. Si ambos eran necesarios para ubicarnos espacialmente, pero fueron demasiadas paginas en eso.
Hablando de los personajes: todos odiamos a Phoebus, ¿cierto? No me lo aguanto. Al igual que al propio arcediano de la catedral, don Claude Frollo, creo que es una de las mentes más retorcidas que he llegado a leer, la profundidad de su obsesión me parecía completamente palpable y me daban ganas de meterme en el libro y sacar a la pobre Esmeralda de las garras de este tipo. Ahora Esmeralda y Quasimodo, estos dos fueron víctimas de todo lo que sucede en el libro, o sea, nada de lo que pasa es su culpa y siempre terminan en medio de todo. La verdad creo que Víctor Hugo tenía una excelente capacidad para describir emociones y transmitirlas de una manera muy acertada.
Las ultimas 200 páginas creo firmemente que fueron las mejores de las 600 y tanto, lograron mantenerme pegado: principalmente las últimas 80 en las que estuve en vilo rezando para que todo acabara de la mejor manera, pero ajá. He de reconocer que llegué a estar a punto de llorar.
El final me encanto. Pero me habría gustado que fuese una lectura más ágil, creo que si le quitáramos como unas 100 páginas o un poco más sería un libro perfecto.
EN CONCLUSIÓN, ES UN LIBRO QUE TRANSMITE TODO LO QUE EL AUTOR TE QUIERE HACER SENTIR Y EN ESO CREO QUE ÉL NO FALLA, PUES SUS PERSONAJES PUEDEN LLEGAR A SER TAN RETORCIDOS COMO BUENOS. EL PERO QUE LE VEO ES QUE DA DEMASIADAS VUELTAS PARA LLEGAR A ALGO Y ADORNA CON DEMASIADAS FLORITURAS SU ESCRITURA LO QUE ME HACIA SENTIR LA LECTURA UN POCO LENTA, PERO AL FINAL DE CUENTAS SI LA RECOMIENDO.

This was SUCH a masterpiece. This has been the only classic to make me shed tears! It's so juxtaposed in that it is literally laugh-out-loud funny and also one of the most depressing novels I've ever had the pleasure to read. Incredibly complex characters and the writing is truly magnificent.
However, I just CANNOT justify giving 5 stars to a book that didn't even really touch the plot until 200 pages in. I have never EVER struggled through chapters like I did the first 3rd of this book. It is basically just listing French political figures and mapping out old Paris and is sooooooo dull (in my opinion). It took me 4 months to read the first 200 pages and 2 weeks to read the rest.

liked it a lot more than i thought i would, really was kind of sceptical going in since there was a lot of info-dumping at the start of it, but gradually it got exciting and i loved it.
